The Buddha Spotlight: Author of Mama Glow – Latham Thomas

Namaste y’all!

The Buddha Spotlight introduces you to Latham Thomas

Goddess Mena Love: Do you have any advice for women trying to conceive naturally?

Latham Thomas:  Stop “trying” and start being. Now what do I mean by that- procreation, like any other natural process does not require thinking, planning or strategizing- it’s really not about designing your sex life around when you are ovulating, it’s about practicing a lot with your partner, having a lot of good sex on a regular basis as a training ground to boost your fertility. With conception- its less about control and more about surrender, letting go, and being receptive, which happens when you relax and forget about the outcome, and focus on being in the moment. Embody the sexiness and have fun!

Goddess Mena Love:  How important is meditation while pregnant?

Latham:  I believe you should implement practices that work for you. Some people don’t enjoy meditation- because they aren’t ready for it. So they have to find a way to transcend that they enjoy. There are lots of benefits to meditating while pregnant- including increased oxygen flow to baby.

Goddess Mena Love:  How important is to change your diet before & during pregnancy?

Latham:  What you eat will become the building blocks of your future child. Would you rather build a castle of sand or of stone? Preconception detoxification- which I outline in the pre-pregnancy section of the book, and a healthy plant based diet of whole foods with a focus on what I’ve termed “glow foods” for optimal wellness. Find recipes on

Goddess Mena Love:  Tell me about your doula experience.  What inspired you to become a doula?

Latham:  Becoming a doula seemed like a natural progression to my work. I was serving pregnant women in my prenatal yoga classes, many of them found that my soothing energy and sense of calm was just what they wanted when they went into labor. I applied for a fellowship and was trained as a doula with the Hudson Perinatal Consortium. My experience as a doula has influenced every aspect of my life, including my parenting. A lot of the principals echo teachings from yoga. I have learned to trust the process, go with the flow, watch and wait, listen, take a back seat and support each of these lessons are addressed in my book as well.

Goddess Mena Love:  Any advice for women who would like to become a doula?

Latham:  Listen to the calling to serve. Find a community.

Goddess Mena Love:  What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned on your path of awakening?

Latham:  The birth of my son was the biggest lesson.

Goddess Mena Love:  What’s music are you listening to, right now? What’s in your playlist?

Latham:  I listen to everything- it depends on my mood. Lots of classic soul. I love Baptize by RKCB.

Goddess Mena Love:  What advice do you have for women going through depression (i.e. post partum depression) without a healthy team of support?

Latham:  It’s important to build a sister circle of support around you especially if you have a history of depression prior to pregnancy. See

Goddess Mena Love:  What is your favorite quote?

Latham:  Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know. ~Pema Chodron

Goddess Mena Love:  What are some tips for manifesting dreams into reality?

Latham:  I don’t use the word “manifest” all things are born from the womb- from the feminine principal. So I use language that reflects our power in being creatrixes. Wombifesting– is about creating a vacuum and drawing what you want to yourself rather than chasing it down. Dreams are reality waiting to happen if you align your beliefs, actions then they are born. Focus on one thing and nurture it- where you focus your energy fruit is born.

Goddess Mena Love:  How important is it to speak affirmations to yourself?

Latham:  It’s very important to speak blessings on yourself. But if you don’t believe what you are saying it doesn’t work. Words are powerful and can heal.

Goddess Mena Love:  What’s your meditation destination?

Latham:  I don’t go someplace in my mind- I allow the sensations moving through me to take the driver’s seat.

Goddess Mena Love:  Are you a vegan or vegetarian? How important is it to change your diet while living a spiritual life?

Latham:  I eat a vegan diet and it works for me. I’ve been vegan since I was 14. I believe assessing your diet is always a positive thing. Your diet may need to change periodically- certainly with the seasons for instance. The more you eat high vibrational whole foods- the better you feel. Plants specifically have information that programs our cells.

Goddess Mena Love:  What’s your favorite healthy comfort food?

Latham:  Popcorn cooked in coconut oil and topped with truffle salt.

Goddess Mena Love:  What is your favorite healing plant?

Latham:  Yarrow and Raspberry leaf.

Goddess Mena Love:  When you are not at home, how do you create peace for yourself?

Latham:  I’m a Taurus so I always have to feel grounded wherever I am. I bring objects that make me feel cozy while traveling. But otherwise when I close my eyes and breathe I make space for myself.

Goddess Mena Love:  No one speaks too much about consciously dating. What are your views on dating or being in a relationship with a mate that may not fully understand the path you’re on?

Latham:  I date who I feel a magnetic affinity toward. Who inspires me and who I inspire. I don’t expect him to understand my path- it’s for me to unfold. All I expect is for him to respect what I am doing, and where I am headed and just support me along the journey. If you focus on just being yourself and leading by example- the best in you will influence your partner and vice versa.

Goddess Mena Love:  Any advice for people who are just starting out on this path of awakening?

Latham:  Listen to the whispers within.

The Buddha Spotlight: Astrologer – Mark Husson (Pt. 2)

Goddess Mena Love: Wow, and everything is in Cancer for me!

Mark: I LOVE that! You doubly have the emotions overflowing! It’s a connection for better or worse with your mother. You strive to be the matriarch in whatever family you end up building. You will always have kids, whether you gave birth to them or not. You will always have advice. You will always be nurturing. The shadow of Cancer is just that part that feels, in the myth, “she burnt the skin off her kids because they were half mortal and half god to get the mortal part off, not realizing that she was killing her kids. She thought she was doing what’s best for the child”.

Cancers make the mistake of believing they’re right all the time. A spiritual revelation for me, I’m also a Cancer, is that you can’t pretend to walk around like, “I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, I’m all about LOVE and forgiveness”, when there’s other stuff going on! You gotta tell the truth sometimes. People always yell at me, “I thought you were Mr. Course in Miracles, Mr. Spiritual!” Here’s where I am with that, because I am “Mr. Course in Miracles, Mr. Spiritual”, as they say, I can tell you I don’t f***ing know what to do!

Goddess Mena Love: THANK YOU!! I feel the same way!

Mark: I don’t have a picture of what spiritual looks like. Spiritual means coming to God in my mind and saying this is all the ugly shit I’m carrying! I don’t know what to do with it, I need help, but I can’t pretend it’s not there!

Goddess Mena Love: Wow, thank you for saying that! I feel like because I exude this LOVE frequency and exploration of spirituality, people tend to put me in a box of how they think I should be. I always want to convey to people that I make mistakes too, I don’t know everything, and I’m ever-evolving, ever growing, and ever changing! This is totally my experience!

I was contemplating about a blog post I wanted to post in regards to my LOVE/hate relationship to yoga. Sometimes I LOVE it, sometimes I don’t.

Mark: People will LOVE it and LOVE you for being honest about it! It’s a process, not just for you, but for everyone. You’re allowing people who might also feel the same way to feel like they aren’t the only ones! You’re breaking the agreement that you have to agree that we’re only here as friends because we agree! We’re friends because I get to be honest with you! I get in trouble all the time because my posts can be irreverent at times. Sometimes, I feel like people are expecting me to be the “nice guy” all the time, and sometimes I don’t want to be! I’m growing, too!

That’s the thing I LOVE most about being authentic as you can be. Until we can tell the truth, can we not fix it? You posting, “I’m tired of yoga, it makes me sick right now”, will make people who are going through the same thing LOVE that about you, and LOVE that they can relate to you, and you can relate to them! Know that people, who believe in yoga because they identify with it, will be mad at you, but that’s life. What we identify with and what we focus on , we become! You’re saying that you are not yoga! You LOVE yoga, but right now in this moment, you don’t LOVE this certain thing about it, and it’s okay, it’s a process, and it’s a thing we do!

Goddess Mena Love: Being an astrologer, are you always plugged in to the astrological world when you interact with people?

Mark: I’m always plugged into it because Astrology became my 2nd language! I’ll never forget a sign! Our FedEx guy is a Taurus, and if you don’t know, Taurus’ really LOVE to hear some appreciation, more than other signs of the zodiac. So, remembering that, or when his complaint is based in some kind of discomfort, is something that’s really important to him.  If I didn’t know that about him, I might put him up with somebody who complains about everything. Because I see him as a Taurus, I’m able to LOVE that his reference is comfort, I get it! When he’s comfortable, he’ll worry that it’s going to go away!

I don’t see anyone as separate from me, that’s my daily practice.

Goddess Mena Love: What is something that you work on, as far as self-improvement?

Mark: Forgiveness. Forgiveness can sound a bit magnanimous, like I’m letting you off the hook. I don’t like the forgiveness in that way, but I like the idea that I can get to a place in my mind where I can see that there’s been no crime committed, I couldn’t be hurt here if I wanted to be. I work on forgiveness in my mind a lot. I have a lot of things that I don’t like in the world, I’m a critic! I have Jupiter in Virgo, which is like five times the criticism! So, when I’m walking in the grocery store and seeing people eating from the raw food bins, in my mind I’m thinking, “Really? I wanted some, now your fingers are in it!” It’s non stop for me, but what helps me stop is being the observer. I kick on the observer, look at myself and kind of chuckle. I get myself to find the humor at my critic going crazy! Astrology has helped me LOVE who I am! People who I normally wouldn’t have any tolerance for, I have tolerance for, knowing their sign.

Goddess Mena Love: I have this friend that is very good with astrology. I think she’s awesome at readings and just with the knowledge of astrology. She’s in a place where she feels like she doesn’t or can’t charge people for her readings, because it’s a self-taught spiritual gift. How can people who have developed their spiritual gifts become comfortable with making a living out of it?

Mark: There is a spiritual foundation that I think is really important for people like her, and we all were there, because we all question that at some point. That foundation is to meet people where they are if you want to make a difference. There’s a beautiful NLP (neuro-linguistic programing) thing that when a client comes to you and their energy is a bit high, raise your energy to meet them. When you meet them, by raising your energy up, bring them down consciously so that they’ll follow you, but you gotta meet them there first!

In our culture, in our world, we only value the things that we purchase, things that we feel we extend energy for, money is energy. By your friend saying that she can’t charge, she’s just made money real and she’s made money very powerful. She’s giving it the exact opposite of what she wants to give. All it is, is an energy exchange. Imagine you say to people that your services are $200, you’ll give all your wisdom and all your time. The people tell you they can’t afford it, but they really need to talk to you. You can say things like, “I’ll give it to you free” or you could say, “I accept payments”. Find a way to give it meaning. I can tell you from history that every time I give something for free to somebody, it’s part of the culture of “ooh good, I got it for free”, very little is appreciated around it. Set it up as an energy exchange, if you have the money and you want to spend it in this arena, come and see me. Holding the stance that you can’t charge makes you very special. It makes you feel you have a gift you must share.

We are exchanging wisdom. You’re smarter as a result of that client. Your client allowed you to project everything you know about astrology and everything you know about problems, and to solve them right with the client. Every client comes to you with a picture of life, a picture of who they are, and you’re exchanging with them. You’re not superior. You’re not greater than them. You both agreed to come together to do an exchange. Now, them paying you is their version of extending that energy to you and you giving that wisdom to them as the teacher, you’re giving that energy back to them.

When you say, “I can’t charge”, what you’re basically saying is that you’re superior because you have the gift and you shouldn’t accept their energy on the gift. This is called spiritual specialness! What that means is that in order for you to get to God, you must do this good thing. We make up these rules of what kindness looks like or what spiritual looks like. Truly, that’s just a little arrogant, and what it needs to be is “I’m here, I charge this, and let’s exchange”. It’s your livelihood. I definitely get it and I understand why people go there, but to me it’s a twisted form of egoism, “I’m special and what I have should not be charged for”. Being this way separates yourself from the world; you’ve made everyone who does charge wrong for doing so, and you’ve made everyone who wants to buy your services wrong for doing so. This is a clear picture of playing games with spiritual authenticity, true authenticity. We’re here, we’re in the world, and nobody is better than anyone else. The subconscious part of that for your friend is, if she doesn’t charge for her services, she must, in her mind, think that everyone that does charge, is not spiritual. Come to terms with it by realizing that that’s just bullsh*t! Do your thing, have fun, but CHARGE!

Goddess Mena Love: Is it necessary to always have your birth chart accessible for guidance?

Mark: I think it would be wonderful if people learned their chart, just to know, and put the 12 planets in their memory—knowing what’s your rising sign, etc. And that’s only if you meet someone who is an astrologer. When Mars goes direct into Libra, for you, that’s your 4th house. Now, I can just predict this without looking at your chart, there’s going to be some new direction in your home, a new sense of what you want, a new sense of balance, and you finally can feel like an answer to a question that hasn’t been able to be answered, will be answered. That’s exciting! Imagine if we knew that piece of information. Big events are going to happen and astrologers can guide you on where it’s going to affect your life.

Goddess Mena Love: Tell me more about 12academy, 12radio, and the number 12 for you?

Mark: The number 12 comes from my LOVE of astrology and the 12 signs. My partner and I had a store for 30 years called The 12th House, because that’s where the conscious and subconscious mind meet, like dreams. The truth of the story is when we converted to the Internet, we had nine psychics that worked for us in our store. I had my masters in counseling and I was a freak about how they treated people! My focus was to become known as the place that cared about what people heard and got. The access to our store was shut down for four years, because of highway construction. I didn’t know what to do, we were hanging by a shoe string, I had nine psychics depending on me to keep open so they could live, in the meantime, I’m getting debtors everyday, and basically that’s when the shit started happening. I heard my inner voice loud and clear say, “You gotta take care of those women, they work for you”. That led me to do this incredible search, where I found this company that would help me do this “click for advice” thing; you call, click their picture, and the phone would ring. I called my friend, who was working on the sites for me and I told him that I had no money, no reason to ask for this, but “please build a site for me for these nine psychic women”. We put them online and in the first week, I saw more money than I ever saw in that store. I was so happy that I could pay everything, get out of debt and help the nine psychic women. I had the balls now, the faith in myself to call Hay House.

I called Hay House, and got the CEO on the line. I pitched doing my book, and the CEO was kind of unsure about it because there were so many other astrology books out there. I told him, “Let me show you, give me one vehicle to do this, give me something, a radio show, anything”. He said okay! By the end of the day, I was hooked up with the radio show, the book deal, and was allowed to advertise one thing. I advertised 12Listen, where my psychics were! I’m still with them 7 years later, I got the number one show (on, which cracks me up because they got some big time people on the roster! Then, we needed a way for the world to hear them, so we opened 12Radio! All of my psychics are teachers so that led to 12Academy! So now, we can hear them, learn from them, and call for personal readings if you want. I’ve learned so much from all of this. I’ve grown so much, and wanted to be the guy that had something more personal and more real.

Goddess Mena Love: That’s awesome! Tell me more about your book, LoveScopes.

Mark: LoveScopes was written out of that story I told you, and because of my experience with owning a bookstore and seeing people run to the relationship section, I said if I write only one book in my life, it’s going to be a reference book. The CEO that gave me the book deal, told me I had 45 days to write my book, and I did it. I stayed up, I wrote day and night, I worked hard on this book because I did not want to miss my opportunity to get this book out there.

Goddess Mena Love: I first heard about you on Hay House Radio, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Mark: Well thank you! That’s where a lot of people find me and I am grateful in my soul for Hay House to give me that opportunity. I am more grateful to the part of me that put all pride to the side to beg for that opportunity to give me a chance!

Goddess Mena Love: Any advice for people who want to study astrology?

Mark: Yes, the book Inner Sky by Steven Forrest is a phenomenal book to get the learning going. Read that book and take an astrology class from somebody you trust.

Goddess Mena Love: Any advice for people just starting out on this path of awakening?

Mark: GO BACK TO SLEEP! Just kidding!!! I think the idea is to remember that there’s nothing to prove, that awakening can sometimes be just a more painful awareness, but awareness will really keep us free, honest, and just aware! If all else fails, extend kindness. LOVE yourself through the exploration process!

Goddess Mena Love: Yes, and I believe that people like to put you in a box once you figure out you want to explore something that you’re currently attracted to.

Mark: Yes, it’s really crazy. People LOVE to project on to you. That’s why there’s such an illusion to the same religion, the same belief. We have to be careful that we don’t become the nasty version of the Christians. New Agers do the same thing, too! People also don’t want to know that New Agers get sick! It’s ridiculous and a form of hatred. I think that there’s so much projection that all we can do is be real, be normal, tell the truth, like what you’re doing, and let people have what they have. Whatever people think about you, is what they think about you.

Goddess Mena Love: Finish this statement. I have this cool life that gives me access to…….

Mark: Wow! I have this cool life that gives me access to LOVING people of like mind and a lifestyle that doesn’t require me to be anywhere. I’m here. I am.

Goddess Mena Love: Mark, thank you so much for being a part of The Buddha Spotlight!

Mark: Thank you sweetie, you are a ball of fun!

The Buddha Spotlight: Astrologer Mark Husson (Pt. 1)

Namaste ya’ll!

The Buddha Spotlight introduces you to Astrologer, Mark S. Husson!

Goddess Mena Love:  What attracted you to the world of astrology?

Mark S. Husson:  The world of astrology  was brought to me by way of being a psych major. I was on a quest; I’m a Cancer with all this scorpio in my chart, and we’re just always seeking, wanting to understand, and feeling so victimized from the world. I remember looking through Linda Goodman’s Love Signs, and feeling like, “Oh my god”,  I can really forgive myself! I was just so grateful that I was in a time where most psychologist were studying astrology. I’m like you, I was shy, and was thinking that there was no way I would put myself in the spotlight of anything! That’s how astrology suddenly gave me a key to forgiving myself for not being able to be like somebody else outside of me. It changed my life!

Goddess Mena Love: Do you have to be “gifted” or have “special powers” to learn astrology?

Mark: Ha! That man came to me once and transferred some energy…, no, no! You have to have a LOVE for learning a new language, thats all it really is. When we say, “I’m a Cancer” or “my moon is in Leo”, we’re talking a language. For some people, that’s daunting! I think that if someone can make you LOVE it by showing you the joy of it within them, sometimes it’s contagious! You’re gonna want that! So, to answer your question, no you don’t need any special powers to learn astrology!

Goddess Mena Love: What’s the most common question you get when doing readings?

Mark: “Oh my god, what’s going on with me”!  I think astrology helps you to not become a victim. In a way, you realize, it’s not just you being messed up, there’s a planet sitting on your sun, and the astrologer translates that for you!

Goddess Mena Love: I keep seeing the numbers 722, which is my birthday, every where I go! Can you give me insight on what that means?

Mark:  I wish my birthday would show up! Seriously, I think the oracle is personal for us. I think that when you have that the number in your head and you happen to see it, and it’s like your eyes subconsciously catches it over and over, either it’s something (at that time) that reminds you of you, your birth, or your history, possibly a past life memory. I think it’s important to take that with you into meditation and ask for clarity of why those numbers keep showing up.

Goddess Mena Love: When I see my special numbers, I try to relate it to the exact situation I’m in. For example, If I’m listening to a song and I see my numbers, I kind of look for the answers within that song.

Mark: Yes, it’s your personal oracle! I read one of your blog posts, it was a posting of John Mayer’s song, Clarity, and you put “this song was in my head”! That’s such a sweet song! I thought, I’m like you in that way where I like to bring spiritual meaning to things that happen. There are certain songs that I hate, that replay in my mind all the time, you know, the ear worms, and I listen to it live, and when I really study the lyrics I find that there is a little message for me.  I think we can do that with all of life! I also think that we forget to search for the spiritual meanings for things that occur in our lives. Those of us that remember to do it, are lucky! Let’s learn to be in tune to using our personal oracles to find the spiritual meanings of our life!

Goddess Mena Love: Speaking of being in tuned with our personal oracles, I pull my own cards when spirit guides me.

Mark: I LOVE it! I’ll turn off the radio, ask a question, turn the radio back on and whatever song comes on next is the answer to my question! And I have to accept that song as my answer!

Goddess Mena Love: I’ve done that! I’ve so done that with seeking spiritual signs of being in a relationship with my boyfriend! And the next song always has a special phrase, catch word, or something that jumps out at me to give that specific answer!

Mark: Brilliant! I LOVE that! See, that’s you trusting life, LOVING you! Trusting life to give you what you need, not to hurt you, I LOVE that! SO yes, using oracles in your everyday life is such a joyful thing to do! We forget sometimes to do this, I forget, too, but we’re all here to be LOVED, not hurt! Let’s take a minute to listen to what message is trying to get through to me. See, the fact that you pull cards, use intuition while listening to the radio or watching a movie, there’s just so much crazy coincidental stuff that goes on that makes you like, “WHAT?”, and  I LOVE that kind of stuff because it reminds me that there’s something so much bigger than us.

Goddess Mena Love: What’s in your playlist right now?

Mark:  I have some really eclectic music in my playlist! There’s this song called Opulence by Brook Candy, Rather Be by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne,

I got some Lily Allen, I’ve just discovered Jessie Ware and I LOVE her,  Joan Armatrading from way back in my past, a group called Walk The Moon, I even downloaded some RuPaul recently! I LOVE and adore music that moves me! I can tell you LOVE music and it’s just so sweet. When you played that song from John Mayer, I thought about a comment that he made about being sexually racist, and a part of me thought that was like a part of you that went beyond that personality and got into the artist to soley just enjoy the music, or you didn’t know. Either way, it was a moment for me to  contemplate that moment on what he said. I thought that was kind of cool on your part!

Goddess Mena Love: All sorts of music just pops up in my mind! I have a mental library full of great eclectic music from all genres. It’s so funny, because when I was younger, I was totally raised around different types of music. Around the age of 5 – 12, I would sing songs from eras I  wasn’t born in, to being in utero, or as a baby and toddler, and people would always ask “How do you know that song? You weren’t even born, you were too little!”. The music is just in me!

Mark: I LOVE that, and I LOVE people  with that because that is, to me, such a testament to what your life force is floating on, it’s floating on music, and its timeless!

Goddess Mena Love: The only time I can remember things about my childhood, is if it’s associated with a particular song.

Mark: Pharrell has, what he calls a dis-ease, but I think it’s a deformity, that doesn’t allow him to see in images. He can only see with music and colors. It reminds me of that, because when he did an interview he talked about that being the reason he came up with Happy, the song kept getting rejected. He re-wrote Happy 13 times. Once he started seeing the music coming together in images, he knew he nailed it, all in how the colors landed. But, yes, it’s a similar thing to me that music brings you to a place where it allows the synapses to come into the memory.  So, that’s really cool, and it does suggest that you’re extraordinary creative!

Goddess Mena Love: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned on your spiritual journey?

Mark: I am madly in LOVE with A Course in Miracles! A Course in Miracles taught me that nothing out here is my salvation, and that this is the illusion that we get separated from God.

I’m about to get a little technical….

So, what the course did for me, was teach me that we live in a place of guilt that we actually pulled off this separation from the most LOVING force, which is our CREATOR. We created this world so that we can kind of hide from God. And that story made so much sense to me because I realized that there’s no such thing as working back towards my spirituality, there’s no such thing as being able to break that connection, it’s all a lie that we’ve told ourselves and buy into. We spend most of our lives trying to cover up that guilt that we think we did the impossible, that’s the beauty of the course. I also learned that whenever I’m hurt or disappointed, here, in the world, it reminds me that this isn’t my end place. This is my illusionary place of guilt that I created while I’m sleeping this dream of separation, I’m gonna be okay, and I’m gonna wake up.

A Course in Miracles talks a lot about the way you wake up, being forgiving, to try to see yourself in every single person you talk to. To me, that seemed to be the most LOVING thing. It reminded me that my salvation isn’t out here! So, when I needed Hay House to really LOVE my book, or to ask me to be a part of I CAN DO IT, I realized when I got this message really LOUD and CLEAR that my salvation wasn’t really out here and the truth that I’m seeking isn’t out here, it totally took that pain away. What does matters is, there’s a way to heal your guilt. This is not a religion, there’s not just a way, I just do it by example. People like who I am, and they know that it’s possible for them, too. The biggest lesson was that I can’t break the LOVE from where I cam efrom.

Goddess Mena Love: What is your view on soul mates and karmic relationships?

Mark: You know, I don’t really believe in them in the way people talk about them. I’m  not a big fan of the word, karma. I think karma is our excuse to judge and feel good that we judge being better than someone else. I understand karma in it’s purest sense, however, I don’t like what we’ve done with it. We’ve turned it into a “I’m better than you” kind of thing, and that makes me a little nervous. Soul mates are contradictory to the idea that we all came from the same source.  I do think there are certain people in this reality that reflect the wound I must take care of in myself, soul mates bring that up, and those are my real heroes. Some of the most difficult relationships I had, have pointed to me the deepest pain I carried. On the flip side, I don’t think the other person does anything, we project it all. I think that we pull in the people, we pull in what part of ourselves they are going to affect, and then we release them when we’re done. I think that as a projection, people are tools in our own evolution. Soul mates don’t have to just be our LOVERS, sisters, or brothers, they can be anybody in any form.

In the personal sense, people say they found their soul mates and I wink at that. I wink at that because I know that it’s validation of their idea of being separate from the source. My belief is that we did come from the same source, so identifying one source as my soul mate sort of invalidates that idea. There are people here that are more important for my development in this physical reality than others because I have wounds that that fit it perfectly. Psychologist, Carl Young said, “we bring in relationships for one thing only, so we can see our shadow“. You can’t see it otherwise, unless its reflected it back to you by somebody else.  That’s a reflection of our yin and yang, a reflection of our ability to hold for our inner feminine. If you happen to hold the space of the feminine with your boyfriend and he seems more detached from you at times, if you took a moment and saw him and said, “what part of me is judging my attachment?”, you bring it back to yourself. It’s an incredible facilitator of healing.

Goddess Mena Love: If two particular sun signs are not compatible does that mean that the relationship won’t evolve into something beautiful?

Mark: First of all, there is no such thing as incompatible, truly.  A lot of the great psychologists would say, unless you have some elements of friction, you can’t have passion. The inherent part of sexuality and passion is that friction! Otherwise, we all would be looking for our brothers and sisters energy. Its in that reach of what’s different for us that we just want that creates sexuality. So, no such thing as incompatible, however, there are certain signs, as you probably know, that might rub you the wrong way because they do life differently.

Astrology tells us how to make the most out of what we’re getting from the other person. So, when you took your first breath, you were imbued with ten planets, each in a different sign or maybe some in the same sign, but that’s your map that you’re walking around with. Let’s say you meet another person, they did the same thing, took a breath at a certain time, and walking around the universe with their ten planets. They collide when you both meet. Now, some of those planets are holding hands and laughing, and some of those planets are like “you make me sick”. Over time, once you see and get a hold of their map, you understand and you steer clear of the parts of their life you don’t want to be a part of.  Imagine knowing what you could do different just by knowing the personal maps of LOVED ones. Imagine we had that wisdom for every sign of the zodiac, that is crazy cool, and that means that any relationship can work, especially if we take the ones that hurt us or are difficult, and look within ourselves to see if there’s a way to get some deeper understanding.

Goddess Mena Love: I’ve been reading a lot and practicing the use of a word I recently learned, equanimity. Because I know certain traits (that I don’t particularly like) about my Virgo LOVER, it alerts me to stay in a state of calmness when he’s roller skating on my last nerves. My ego wants to go dead off on him and I do sometimes, but like I said because I know spiritual information on him and myself, I can take better care of the situation.

Mark: That’s right! I always say don’t ever argue with a Virgo! Just agree that they’re right about everything! What they’re usually defending against is you’re going to come back at them with an even smarter viewpoint of where they were wrong, and that messes with them! The other part of it is, I believe in the theory of Velcro, which requires two pieces. What he’s doing wouldn’t stick to you if didn’t have some layer of guilt on it.

This is where my big fantasy thing is.

Imagine that you have a part of your mind that is saying the very things he is saying to you. Imagine that you woke up with that critic, with that fear of this part not feeling good to you. You go to him for validation that this is not true, unconsciously, and then he throws something at you that sort of takes you back, that makes you want to attack, right? All forms of attack are to defend ourselves from our own attack. This is what we do as humans, we want to get it off of us by putting it on someone else. So, if you could take his word, and look at yourself and say, “what part of me agrees with this, what part of me believes him, what part of me said that very thing to myself and now I’m going to project it to him as if he brought it to me?” Figure out why what he’s said to you, stuck to you in the first place. Figure out why you both have a psychic agreement that he could say that and it would hurt. There’s something that’s trying to emerge, just like the number 722 for you. Something in your consciousness is trying to emerge that your subconscious mind is trying to get you to see. It’s a wound that needs healing! A Course in Miracles taught me to ask for help! Ask for guidance in seeing a situation differently, that you’re bothered by. Has he accused you of trying to manipulate him or control him?

Goddess Mena Love: He hasn’t really accused me, however I have brought it up in a way that sounds like, “I’m not trying to control you”.

Mark: Gotcha! You’re good and you’re so aware! You’re awake and that makes such a difference in the world. The same behavior when you’re asleep has a very different effect than when you’re awake. Cancers do manipulate, and their extraordinary with it! Cancers nudge!

Cancer brings in the sign of summer, which makes it the aggressor in a way. Cancer also rules emotions. You understand feelings! You know how to make someone feel bad for what they did without even saying it. That’s power, and Cancers get to own that! Cancers can make you feel bad, and make you feel really good! Understand that everyone manipulates, it’s not a big deal, it’s just that Cancers are freakin’ good at it, because that’s the nature of Cancer. It’s how you get to be a mom! You make the kids do what you want them to do by nudging and coercing the emotional environment, and they follow.

The Buddha Spotlight: Holistic Health Coach & Yoga Instructor – Alicia Somma (Pt. 1)

Namaste y’all!

The Buddha Spotlight introduces you to Holistic Health Coach & Yoga Teacher,  Alicia Somma!

Goddess Mena Love:  When did you fall in LOVE with yoga?

Alicia Somma:  To be honest, I’ve always been a sucker for anything that has that hippie vibe to it. When I got introduced to yoga, it felt like another jewel to add to my flower crown. Here was this beautiful Goddess teaching me all of these esoteric concepts like my “energetic body” and feeling like a warrior in virabhadrasana and well, I just ate it up! I was about 17 then, very impressionable, spending lots of time longing for the 60s. I think I actually found a respectful love for yoga the more I learned about it. As I ventured into my practice and started actually implementing these lessons (meditating on my chakras for instance rather than just feeling cool that I knew they were there) I gradually fell more and more in love on the daily.

Goddess Mena Love:  What style of yoga do you practice?

Alicia:   I took 500hrs of training with YogaWorks which blends Ashtanga and Iyengar. I studied with YogaWorks based on their reputation and recommendation from my teacher, and I am REALLY happy I did! Ashtanga is very physical and I like that, but Iyengar encourages the use of props and that’s very helpful as well. The true answer to this question is that all is yoga, yoga is the practice of calming the mind and even when I’m not on my mat, that’s what I aim to do.

Goddess Mena Love:  What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned teaching yoga?

Alicia:  The biggest lesson I have learned from teaching yoga is to teach to the room! It’s not about you, the teacher. I sometimes will get all amped up on a sequence that includes crazy balances and inversions and I’ll walk into my class and have all 50+ women in front of me who are just looking for some peace and quiet. I then let go of the expectation I had for the class, I save my kick ass sequence for another day, and move forward to do what I’m meant to do there which is HELP PEOPLE. ❤

Goddess Mena LoveWhat advice do you have for women going through depression without a healthy team of support?

Alicia:  The advice I would give to any woman going through any sort of depression without a team of support would be to find a team of support. I think that though a woman’s body is extremely powerful, as human beings we neeeeeeed cOMmunity, especially when we are down. The love of others picks us up! Talking about our feelings and connecting heart to heart, human to human is essential for moving through any difficult time in life. In 2014 there should be no reason for any woman to feel alone; go online and find people who are going through the same thing as you are and connect with them! It’s admirable for a woman to want to rise out of the ashes like a Phoenix all on her own, but in reality a team of support allows the transition to happiness to be a smoother and more sustainable one.

Goddess Mena Love:  What’s your favorite quote?

Alicia:  There are sooooo many phenomenal quotes from Thoreau, Emerson, The Buddha, The Bible, SO MANY!! I have to say that pretty much anything His Holiness The Dalai Lama says is like gold to me, but I’ll pick this one:

When asked what surprised him about humanity the most, the Dalai Lama replied:
“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
HOW INCREDIBLY POWERFUL IS THIS?!?!?! This quote summarizes why I am proud to do things differently.  ❤
Goddess Mena Love:  What are some tips for manifesting dreams into reality?
Alicia: Manifesting dreams into reality…keep dreaming, but start DOING! With the wave of “The Secret” and Vision Boards, I think people mistakingly feel that they can sit around and do nothing and somehow acquire everything! To illustrate precisely what I mean, I’ll use my own example, my dream of owning a farm one day 🙂 Right now, my life consists of holistic health coaching and teaching yoga;  my day to day is filled with my duties, the jobs I have to pay my bills. Meanwhile, my heart is filled with visions of farm life. I bring these visions to life-yes with vision boards- but with an endless search for knowledge on just HOW to make this dream a reality. I read books that teach me, I go to lectures that teach me, I am constantly online searching for more, I visit farms and ask questions, and I talk about it CONSTANTLY. My love and I sit almost every night and talk about our dream, I share my vision with friends, family, and anyone who will listen. Keep dreaming, keep learning, keep sharing, and all will come.
Goddess Mena Love:  How important is it to speak positively to yourself?
Alicia:  Here’s the reason for the switch: I think that when people are given something to do DAILY, it can seem daunting. If someone were to look in the mirror everyday and tell themselves they are a beautiful, loving miracle, that would be AWESOME! The reality that we will all remember to do this while sleepily brushing our teeth in the morning is doubtful. Rather than put pressure on myself and clients to have a positive affirmation ritual, I simply say to ALWAYS speak positively to oneself ! It can be really easy to get tripped up in negative self talk, and I think before we go and overwhelm our morning routine with yet another “to do”, simply letting go of this ubiquitous habit is a great first step. How often do you call yourself stupid, fat, ugly, or untalented? How often are you comparing yourself to others? Begin by recognizing the beauty that is within you simply by disallowing yourself to speak to yourself in a negative way. From there, speaking to yourself positively is a great practice, morning, noon or night! I tell myself how proud I am of myself every time I lie in Savasana after a rigorous asana practice, I tell myself how fortunate I am every time I feel the possibility to take something for granted, etc. We all talk to ourselves,  all day long, whether we want to admit it or not. Rather than label this talk as yet another self care task, let’s just vow to be as nice to ourselves as we are to our grandmothers; could you picture yourself telling your grandma she is stupid or ugly? Me neither.

Goddess Mena Love:  What was the turning point for you, to get you started on your existing spiritual routine?

Alicia:  I’ve definitely always had a deep interest in spirituality, even as a kid. I’ve already shared being drawn to yoga at age 17, and I started meditating daily at age 20. I was doing all of this, though, without really connecting to mySELF. I denied who I was in a BIG way, and that was because I was in romantic relationships that didn’t serve me. A high school sweetheart that dragged on into my twenties, tearing me to pieces that brought out a lot of ugliness inside of me; then onto another long term love that made me feel confined to a certain standard of who HE wanted me to be. It was no one’s fault but my own, and the two people I speak of are GREAT people, just not for me. Once I mustered up the courage to leave my second boyfriend I had ever had in my life, who I thought I was going to marry, I felt FREE. I didn’t realize, but I wanted to be someone that just plain wasn’t compatible with who he was. Instead of being who I was, I kept being who he wanted me to be, because I loved him more than I loved myself. Once I realized how unhealthy this was for BOTH of us, I left the relationship in pursuit of discovering my truest self. I was still practicing yoga asana and meditating everyday, but this transformative time at age 26 gave new meaning to this idea of introspection. I became what I call “happily selfish”.  I stopped giving my time to people that didn’t deserve it, and finally allowed my self expression to flow.

Goddess Mena Love:  What’s your meditation destination?

Alicia:  I have MANY meditation destinations! I think that’s the fun of it, letting yourself go with wherever the energy wants to take you. I have done guided meditations where I have encountered my spirit animals, guiding me into beautiful mystical woods (no, I was not on hallucinogens, meditation is just THAT powerful!) and I’ve also had practices where I’m just trying to override my to do list in my mind. Everyday is different. Have no expectation for your destination and just sit and be with yourself and see where you go!

Goddess Mena Love:  Are you a vegan or vegetarian? How important is it to change your diet while living a spiritual life?

Alicia:  I have no label for my diet! Everyone’s body is different and rather than live beneath the dogma of veganism, vegetarianism, paleoism, etc. I choose to eat intuitively. Having said that, it takes a LOT of time and effort to properly interpret your body’s signals for what it wants to eat, how much it wants to eat, and when it wants to eat. This is where a coach comes in! Health coaches help you learn just how to eat the best foods for your specific body. Touching on eating meat, I do eat meat, about once a week and only if I know where the animal came from. My dad is a hunter, so usually I eat venison with him on Sundays. I feel comfortable knowing the animal ran free, lived a wild life and died with minimal pain at the hands of a man who respects nature as it is God. I haven’t touched factory farmed meat in almost 10 years, and I never will again. The idea of all of those poor little animals cooped up and living NO life at all for the sake of INDUSTRY that is UNCLEAN and RUINING our environment makes me SICK. This means no conventional dairy, eggs, or meat. No, not even “cage free” eggs or whatever other label you are reading that leads you to believe the animals roamed free. You can’t trust the meat and dairy industries, they are driven by greed and money and don’t give a SHIT about you or the animals they slaughter. I believe in energy transference from animal to human; a sick, sad cow turned to steak will be fed to a human who will be sick and sad. Did you know that the meat industry has no qualms with using cows with cancer for meat? How can eating a cancer be good for you??? I stand by my principles and live according to what I believe to be right with the world. A man sitting in a tree, going back the the roots of humanity as a hunter, meditating with the sounds of the birds and the wind, reveling in the solace of nature and the blessing of witnessing the critters of the woods as unseen by human eyes is so right to me. The deer this man takes for his own to bring to his family to provide meat for his family, as he butchers it himself and cooks it with love; this is how meat should be eaten. I do not label myself as anything, diets included. Live with integrity, be proud of what you eat.
